The similarities are that both can benefit from good nutrition, appropriate therapies, equal opportunities and kindness! Some evidence indicates that Down syndrome is associated with an increased risk of Alzheimer disease, a degenerative disease of the brain that causes a gradual loss of memory, judgment, and ability to function! Although Alzheimer disease is usually a disorder of late adulthood, in people with Down syndrome the signs and symptoms can appear as early as age 30! Autism and Alzheimers also have a link! Besides unique genetic flaws in each, the common thread between an adult with Alzheimers and a baby at the onset of the regressive form of autism is myelin, the insulation of the brains wiring! The differences are that Down syndrome is an anomaly of chromosome 21, causing mental retardation to different degrees-though I wonder if they are not just misunderstood! Autism is caused by insults to the body by way of a toxic environment-be toxins containing vaccines, mercury in fish and in the air, etc!, and Autistic people are not retarded, though they have been called retarded too! One percent of Autism cases are genetic in nature!
