Why is some Cinnamon hot (gum, atomic fire balls etc.) and other Cinnamon not hot (powdered Cinnamon)?
1) A spoonful of cinnamon is a LOT – you wouldnt normally use this much in a day! 2) There have been a couple of studies which suggest a compound in cinnamon might cause cancer in animals, but the results are not robust or conclusive! I wouldnt worry about it at this point!3) There are a lot of different types of cinnamon! Cinnamomum verum (Ceylon cinnamon) is the type used most commonly in the Western world! Cinnamomum aromaticum (Cassia cinnamon or Chinese cinnamon) is also commonly used! In many cases, the cinnamon spice purchased in food stores contains a combination of these different types of cinnamon! So far, only cassia cinnamon has been shown to have any effect on blood sugar, cholesterol and triglycerides in humans! A quarter of a teaspoon (about a gram) is the effective dose, so if you can get Cassia cinnamon to use in your cooking, that would be very healthy – on top of tasting good: a good deal if ever there was one!!
