Does low iron in blood cause hair to thin?

One of the most common causes of hair loss in pre-menopausal women is not hormones, but a nutritional deficiency, with depleted iron stores being the most important factor! Iron deficiency could also be the most likely underlying cause when hair loss is subtle; slowly thinning out over many months or even years! Any Suggestions here?
